Tri 4 Schools was started by Katie Hensel in 2011 after hearing that today’s children will live shorter than their parents (by approximately five years) for the first time in history. With school budgets for health and fitness being slashed all over Dane County, she decided to use the sport of triathlon to do something about it. When triathlon changed Hensel’s attitude towards living a healthy lifestyle, she thought it might do the same thing for kids, allowing them to learn healthy habits and lifestyle sports to last into adulthood.
The first Tri 4 Schools triathlon raised $10,000 and hosted over 400 kids from ages 3-14. Since then, Tri 4 Schools has grown to include a series of three triathlons, a family mud run, and the Exercise to Achievement after-school program, which helps kids train to complete a triathlon while laying the foundation for a healthy lifestyle. They have now given back over $225,000 to local schools, funding everything from school gardens to new playground and gym equipment to mindfulness programs.
When your kids participate in the Run Madtown Kids Race, you’re helping support healthy kids and active, thriving schools. Register today and get ready to show the city that #kidsrunmadtown.
